Sofa Creek Falls

August 11, 2015

Despite some of these recent waterfalls being added bonuses, Sofa Creek was one I sought out.  Sadly though I put this off to the last day as I was leaving, as a result of me believing this was visible from the road.  Though there is a large enough pull-in parking lot, and there are signs that speak to the region, the view of the waterfall is nothing more than a starlight twinkle.

Also without a major zoom lens this is as close as I could perceive the waterfall.  I'm now lead to believe that Wishbone Trail may be a better suited view of the waterfall, giving you a closer access to the mountain.

Quick and Dirty

August 9, 2015

Easily noticed on the road to Cameron Lake, and yet hardly noticed as a waterfall.  Passed by bikers on their trail that runs along Cameron Lake Road.  Known by the ice climbing community as Quick and Dirty the water in summer months is down to a slow very fine trickle off the edge of Mount Crandell.  Though not impossible, for me to get down here in Winter is difficult.  As a result this will have to suffice until that day.  For now I realized there is a pull over spot off the highway next to this waterfall, though I'm unaware if this is maintained in the winter.

Lineham Falls

August 9, 2015

The stop on the road after the Oil Exhibit on the way to Cameron Lake, Lineham is actually a short hike but quite a high elevation climb.  I packed my girlfriend and puppy in the car to tackle this hike with full anticipation of switchbacks through the first kilometer to climb the height.  Sadly I didn't get that ideal condition.

Carthew Falls / Buchanan Falls / Bertha Spring Falls

August 8, 2015

Quite possibly one of the biggest elevation inclines I've faced.  I would start my hike from town at the site of Cameron Falls and travel up in the height of the Rockies to Carthew Lakes following Alderson-Carthew Trail.  Truth be told I thought I would also uncover a waterfall for Alderson Lakes, although that didn't appear to be true, I did uncover one more in Buchanan Falls.

Blakiston Falls

August 7, 2015

A common nearly roadside waterfall.  Blakiston Falls is only one kilometer of a hike in the Red Rock Canyon valley.  Though after the first parking lot area you tend to be submerged in the forest, the trip is short and the view of the waterfall is splendid from both afar and up close.

Mount Blakiston Falls

August 7, 2015

When I pulled in to start my short hike to Blakiston Falls, I was treated to a view of a waterfall dropping down the face of one of the peaks near Mount Blakiston.  Though the peak appears nameless, and the creek that drops down from its top also contains no name, I gave this the name of Mount Blakiston Falls to distinguish it from the waterfall nearby.

Vimy Falls (Irish Dream)

August 7, 2015

My return to Waterton Lakes National Parks for the first time since 2013!  As I pulled into the park early before my camp site was available for me, I planned to do some easy hikes to waterfalls in the park.  I would pull over on the road towards Balkiston Falls and the Red Rock Canyon.  On the spare chance my girlfriend pointed out a waterfall on a mountain I didn't expect to contain one.  The glimmer of the water on a bright sunny day gave-way to Vimy Falls.

Though it's thin this waterfall drops for almost the entire mountain, even though I arrived late in the higher water flow season.  Also the distance from my pull over sight was immense and in need of a much better zoom lens.  I would recommend crossing the highway and heading into to the field where you might be able to take in the waterfall better than I have to offer here.

Update: just discovered that this is an ice climb in winter months; known to the ice climbing community as Irish Dream.

Crypt Falls

September 1, 2013

Crypt Falls is one hike in the Canadian Rockies I would love to do over, and over again.  This hike starts off with a ferry ride across an amazing lake (Upper Waterton Lake), then docks in some thick wooded forested area which will go on for over three kilometers.  After passing higher and higher in elevation, you will clear the woods and enter an opening with rock walls all around you.  After being amazed by the minerals and rock formations you will need to scale alongside a mountain's edge and climb up and pass through a tunnel.  Finally on the other end of the tunnel will be the view atop the mountains and Crypt Lake.

Burnt Rock Falls

September 01, 2013

I truly did enjoy Burnt Rock Falls, and the canyon, even though this is the part of the Crypt Lake Hike that is the most difficult.  The upwards incline in elevation increases dramatically at this point.  It's also important to note that if you started your hike at 9:15 or 10:15 from the ferry, then this will also be the first time the sun will show its face.  As a result the heat will increase right at the point that the elevation does as well.  Don't let this bother you or discourage you from attempting this trail, as this waterfall and its scenery is well worth the effort.

Twin Falls

September 01, 2013

Within the first third of the Crypt Lake Hike, you'll experience these waterfalls in some dense vegetation.  From the Crypt Lake landing to about just past Twin Falls you're encased within the treeline and all the lovely flowers and small critters that go with it.  This will be he first of at least 4 Waterfalls you'll encounter on your hike towards Crypt Lake.

Hell Roaring Falls

September 1, 2013

If I'm honest this was waterfall was a bit of a let down.  Judging by the title, I was expecting some huge waterfall with whopping noise.  In truth it wasn't as big as I had in mind, and it was hard to photograph with no point to stand and look at it.  After looking around the area I did notice that the waterfall was conducive of a much larger performance in the spring.

Cameron Falls

Campsite companion
 Aug 31, 2013

This is an extremely popular town-side waterfall.  This is comparable for me to Bow Falls or Athabasca Falls (In Banff NP & Jasper NP).  Though this isn't as popular in terms of pure numbers, it is just as popular per capita as the waterfall rests on the side of town only mere seconds from the campsite.

After only being away from the camp for minutes, there was a friendly visitor next to the tent.  She seemed very relaxed and friendly to humans, as are the remaining deer in the park.  Though this goes as a forewarning as they roam in the area, and will still attack if provoked.

This isn't the only popular animal this time of year.  You are very likely to encounter bears in this park, both Grizzly and Brown or Black.  Although I'm glad I never had Yogie join me at my campsite, I did see some on the country side around the park.  At this time of year they are in a very high food consumption phase before hibernation.

That all said the waterfall itself is very beautiful, and comes with some history.  There are plaques at the site of the waterfall which depict the early times of Waterton Lakes National Park.  From the parks conception as a fishing and hunting park to its discovery of oil.  They are worth a quick read, and lends depth to the history of the region.

Bertha Falls

August 31, 2013

A short and easy hike to some waterfalls is exactly what I was looking for upon landing in Waterton Lakes National Park.  The Bertha Falls hike did not disappoint me. I got exactly what I was looking for in the short 2.6 Km hike. Should one push twice as hard; in another 2.6 Km you will make it to the lake and the upper falls.
